I’ve been quietly trolling Seattle’s, Chef Kristopher Porter’s Facebook page for weeks now! He is the owner of Sue J’s Southern Cuisine Im a real life foodie and cant help but drool over all the good stuff he post every single day!
Seriously, I live for carbs like this!! When I saw that he was catering a local event I got real excited, like so excited that I didn’t even read that is was a speed dating event for singles. I still REALLY wanted to go so I could get my eat on but, I knew I wouldn’t be able to give you a good run down on this really unique speed dating event hosted by Salon Clarity in Renton Washington. So, I sent my good friend Torrika to hang out and come share the experience!
To be perfectly honest I didn’t even feel like going. Just the thought of meeting new people, meeting new men, had me nervous and thinking of a million excuses why I couldn’t make it after all. But my daughter kept pushing for me to go. “This will be good for you, quit being a homebody and get out of the house!” And she was right. I haven’t been anywhere in ages and it was time to get out of the house.
Candice Watkins, owner of Salon Clarity and Spa, had the place set up in a fashion designed for conversating, even with little notepads.Walking into the salon I could see that this was a very well thought out event. I just want to say a few words about Candace and her business for a quick moment. Salon Clarity is a haircare salon that specializes in weave installs, licensed coloring specialization, and silk presses. I find it very refreshing to see a young black woman who took a passion and made it a reality. Salon Clarity has been in operation since 2012. The shop is tastefully decorated, clean and very organized.
The food was catered by Chef Kristopher Porter.
Yet another successful young black business owner, Kristopher owns a catering business called Sue J’s Fine Southern Cuisine. He also caters for lishfood.com. Honey, when I tell you Kristopher cooked that food to perfection I ain’t lyin! On the menu was Hot Luisiana Crab dip, stuffed roasted red potatoes, and the highlight of the night, chicken and waffles kabobs, with a toasted coconut syrup. I planned to only take one bite of everything, but seriously? I ate my whole plate!
So the event itself was empty, and from my experience this is usually due to not enough promotion of the event. Plus, as we know in WA there is always about 25-30% more females at an event then men. Another issue that was discussed for lack of attendees is for some unknown reason people do not like to pay for privately sponsored events. The event cost $20, and included free drinks and wonderfully catered cuisine, not what you will find in the clubs. Now I know people who complain about not having things to do in western WA, but when we get someone who actually spends the time and money to put events on, we don’t support it. It is vital for us to support our ambitious black brothers and sisters in their endeavors. Or don’t complain!
After about an hour or so of being there Candice started the event. Because there were very few attendees the women stayed seated while the men migrated the room. Each conversation lasted about 10 min. Just enough time to get good unto a conversation before your time was up. After that we played the dating game, where one contestant of the opposite sex sat behind a curtain asked three other contestants three questions to see which one would be a possible match. Of course the questions were highly explicit, but because of the “quick convo” coupled with a few drinks and full bellies , we were all feeling pretty comfortable with one another by then.
I tell ya, I had a great time in this intimate setting meeting new friends. Once you hit your mid 30s you long for a more structured event, where everyone has like minds because everyone is there for the same purpose. A singles meet up is just what we need for a more tasteful way of meeting new people in the south sound area. I’m glad I went, I even met someone ;-).
